Scenes are too dark, too light or need color correction

Editing session will cost about $20 per edit. Typical films have about 10 edits per minute which would run about $200 per film minute. If you estimate by hourly costs post edit sessions are about $300 / hr.

$

Heavy grain in the original film master needs treatment to make it lower grain

Blu-ray needs a low grain look to improve the quality of the final video playback. Heavy grain eats up too much bandwidth to reproduce. Grain filtering to scale back grain is about $2500 for a 100 minute film.

$

Heavy use of camera or scene movement

Water, smoke, explosions, effects, hand held camera or fine details in costumes. This requires additional encoding tweaks to fix video playback quality. Add about $2500 for heavy use throughout the film. Add $1200 for moderate use.

$

Film scratches and dirt in original

Clean up to near perfect levels - usually about $1200 / minute for moderate problems. (Add also about 1 week processing time per 5 minute film time.) This is a treatment usually reserved for classic films. A 90 minute film can easily run $100K +.

$

Use only one of the next three, if you use any.

All are optional quality improvements. If your master tape is from a TV show, shot on video, shot with film at 30 fps, or other original HD video, you can skip these three options. You don't need them.

Original is film - HD Telecine required

Add average cost $85 per 10 minutes plus tapes and session fees $150. These fees are a base session price assuming few problems. Additional hourly session fees are $400 / hr. Reduce the fees by 15% for SD telecine / DVD format only with no HD mastering.

Original is film and the Master Tape or Digital Dub is 29.97 fps with smooth interlace edits and correct cadence 3:2 pulldown

Make a master dub progressive 24 fps. The original has no additional editing after the original 3:2 pulldown and interlace was added.

Add $1500 per 100 minutes.

It may be more economical to re-telecine the master film print again to avoid this problem. (Fill in the box above, "Original is film - Telecine required")

$

Original is film and the Master Tape or Digital Dub is 29.97 fps with some errors. NON-SMOOTH interlace edits and OUT OF CADENCE 3:2 pulldown

Make a master dub progressive 24 fps for a better quality playback.

Reediting the telecine tape master to fix censor or last minute issues is the most common reason for interlace lines and playback jumps. Expensive players tend to smooth over the problems better than cheaper players. The easiest fix is to telecine again from a film master. If you can't do that, we need to look at each edit to find where the 3:2 pulldown gets out of sync. Reset the sync and pull out the 3:2 correctly for the set of scenes till the next edit.

Start at $1000 and add $250, per edit, where this happens.

Example:

If you know the 29.97 fps master was reedited for 10 problem scenes, then the cost estimate would be $1500 plus ($250 x 10) = $4000.

Obviously, it may be more economical to re-telecine the master film print again to avoid these problems if you have a master print. (Fill in the box above, "Original is film - Telecine required". If you telecine again, you don't need to do this rediting the telecine tape master, so leave this value as 0.)

Audio Treatments

$ Estimated Cost

(Enter only numbers no commas or $ signs)

Audio treatment studio session

  • $75 per issue - Low audio level for some dialog or effects, distortion, sync
  • $150 per issue - to add in a new stock library audio effect to fix the problem
  • $200 per issue for foley
  • $250 per issue for SAG actor re-dubbing
  • Price break for many issues:

  • 10 to 20 issues reduce 10% from the cost
  • 20 to 50 issues reduce 20% from the cost
  • 51-100 issues reduce 30% from the cost
  • over 100 issues reduce by 35%
  • Example:

  • 20 sync, low audio level issues fixed with no new audio needed

    20 x $75 = $1500

  • 5 similar issues that need new audio

    5 x $150 = $750

  • 3 issues that need foley added

    3 x $200 = $600

  • 4 scenes with dubbing from SAG actor (min. 1/2 day rates would apply)

    4 x $250 = $1000

  • All of the above fixed

    $1500 + $750 + $600 + $1000 = $3850

  • There are 32 issues total, so you may reduce the estimate cost by 20%
    $3850 x 80% = $3080

Most blu-ray discs have at least 5.1 surround sound.

Automatic Pseudo 5.1 - Upgrade original Audio to 5.1 surround sound

The industry standard is to automatically change mono or stereo to surround sound using an audio treatment process that respositions the audio with phasing, panning and equalization filters.

Visionary does not recommend this option. We suggest to instead use other options, below, for blu-ray authoring.

Add in $2000 for this automatic 5.1 creation service.

    $

Discreet Channel Remastering - Multi-track exists - Upgrade original Audio to 5.1 surround sound

Remix new surround sound 5.1 from the multi-track.

    No re-syncing required - add $12000 for 100 minutes.

Re-syncing, rediting or other audio custom mixes at $185 / hr.

    $

Discreet Channel Remastering - NO Multi-track exists - Upgrade original Audio to 5.1 surround sound

Discreet 5.1 channel custom remix with new stock audio mix in. Front image gets some center channel directs. Back channels get new stock audio to match the environment. Bass LFE channel gets punched up with new effects to sync, as needed. Original rollout title music often goes to the backtracks.

Add $16000 for a moderate audio mix and up to $35000 for a complex mix.
