Pick your authoring budget and see where profits start. Blu-ray replication minimum is 2500 discs. The charts show these costs:
Blu-ray Sales - Dollar per unit sales are charted against these costs. Typically, retail offers about a $8 - $10 payback to the content owner. Each charts legend below has the unit numbers where profit goes positive.
For example: Legend below the chart:
--+-- $5 profit 1L 2350 | 2L 3380
Profit goes positive on the $5 pay back/disc line at:
Encoding budget area charts will just show profits above encoding.
Online Direct Downloads or Cable VOD - Encoding content is much cheaper than authoring for blu-ray. Encoding content will probably give you profits between 25% to 50% for Internet Download or for Cable TV VOD (Video on Demand). An online download $10 sale / $4 for a rental with your share at 50%, gives you $5 or $2 profit per unit. There are no blu-ray discs for Encoding only, so there is no fee for replication. Your profits will be anything above the Encoding chart line.
On-Demand blu-ray sales - This is not yet available. It will probably cost about $7 per disc including shipping and processing. No other disc replication fees are needed. So if you sell a disc at $20 with on-demand, your profits per disc will be $13. Your profits will be anything above the Encoding chart line. On-demand is perfect for blu-ray discs with expected sales under 2000 units.
